Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a common presentation in adult mental health. It is often co-morbid mood and anxiety disorders. Adult ADHD (AADHD) is frequently missed in presentations. There is also the danger of overdiagnosis in the presence of other conditions which disrupt attention and concentration.  Cognitive Behavioural Therapy has been shown to be effective in the treatment of adult ADHD and works by targeting organizational difficulties and distractibility as well as teaching adaptive problem-solving. Furthermore, any psychological impact of the ADHD symptoms on personal beliefs about self are also valid treatment targets. CBT for ADHD has the potential for improving key areas of functioning with a coaching and self-management approach.

This workshop will introduce key skills for working with Adults with ADHD. You will also learn about assessment of AADHD and appropriate use of rating scales. Relevant aspects of the Canadian guidelines for ADHD will also be reviewed including a brief overview of medications and their interaction with psychological treatments. Formulating and dealing with com-morbid conditions will be covered. Case examples will illustrate successful treatment strategies.

The workshop will use handouts, exercises and role-plays to demonstrate practical strategies for dealing with AADHD using condition-specific CBT principle. Clinicians will be guided to use a systematic step by step to address common problem presentations in adults with ADHD

Course attendees will receive a certificate of attendance from the Dept of Psychiatry, University of Ottawa.
