Who we are, what we do, how we operate.

The NBASW is the professional association and regulatory body for social workers in this province. The practice of social work in New Brunswick is regulated by The Act to Incorporate the New Brunswick Association of Social Workers (1988). As a result, anyone who

  • practices as a social worker,
  • uses the title of social worker or registered social worker, or makes use of any abbreviation of such title, or any name, title or designation which may lead to the belief that the person is a social worker,
  • advertises or in any way or by any means holds himself out as a social worker , or
  • acts or holds himself out in such manner as to lead to the belief that he is authorized to fill the office of or to act as a social worker

must be a member in good standing of the New Brunswick Association of Social Workers.

Board of Directors 2007-2008

The Board of Directors is comprised of an elected executive, one director from each local chapter, the NB Director to the Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) board, a representative of the First Nation Social Workers; and one public member appointed by the Minister of Health and Wellness. The Board serves as the governing body of the general membership and administers the affairs of the Association.

NBASW Committees

Legislative Committees

  1. Committee of Examiners: The mandate of the Committee of Examiners is to examine and approve applications for NBASW membership (Section 10(1) and 11(1) of the Act). The Committee is comprised of six registered social workers appointed by the Association and one public member appointed by the Minister of Health and Wellness.
  2. Complaints Committee: The Complaints Committee has as its mandate to consider and investigate complaints of professional misconduct, incompetence and/or a breach of the Code of Ethics (Section 21 of the Act). The Committee is comprised of one member of the NBASW Board, two other registered social workers appointed by the Board, and two alternate registered social workers named by the Board.
  3. Discipline Committee: The mandate of the Discipline Committee is to hear and determine allegations of professional misconduct or incompetence against a member. If the Committee finds a member has committed an act of professional misconduct or incompetence, the Committee may decide on the consequences (Section 23(1) and 23(4) of the Act). The Discipline Committee is comprised of four registered social workers appointed by the Board and one public member appointed by the Minister of Health and Wellness.

Standing Committees

  1. Education Committee: The Education Committee promotes education based on the needs of the NBASW, represents the NBASW on the Advisory Committee of the Schools of Social Work in the Maritimes, and carries out any other activity or duty approved by the Board.
  2. Social Action Committee: The Social Action Committee concerns itself with social issues and in assisting the NBASW in its efforts to bring about social and economic changes in society. The Social Action Committee also acts as coordinator of and resource to social action committees of local chapters, and as liaison to persons or community groups engaged in social action and social change in keeping with the CASW Code of Ethics.
  3. By-Laws Committee: The By-Laws Committee reviews proposed changes to the By-Laws brought forth by the membership, and takes appropriate action (that is, clarification, research, and propose amendments to membership at the annual meeting). The Committee also ensures that amendments that are approved at the annual meeting are incorporated into the By-Laws.
  4. Practice Issues, Ethics and Professional Standards Committee: This committee responds to questions from the members relating to ethics and practice, works on standards and guidelines as needed and, promotes respect for standards in order to encourage excellence and professionalism in social work practice.
